Ecological limit to paper pushers

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

It seems to me that there must be an ecological limit to the number of paper pushers the earth can sustain, and that human civilization will collapse when the numbers of, say, tax lawyers exceeds the world’s population of farmers, weavers, fisherpersons and pediatric nurses.

2006 Turing Award recipient

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

For those who have never heard of the Turing award, it’s basically the Nobel prize for computer scientists. The latest recipient has been announced and for the first time ever in history, it goes to a woman, Frances E. Allen. Not to be a male pig about it, but in a male dominant field such like computer science, this is definitely a milestone worth noting.

We are what we do

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

What we do during our working hours determines what we have; what we do in our leisure hours determines what we are.
– George Eastman

George Eastman is definitely one of my role models. I hope I never forget his perseverance in the face of adversity, and his generosity in giving back. The official Kodak site has a bio on him here.

I’ve hit the big two-five!

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Hurray, I’m finally 25 today. Things to be thankful for:

  1. Significant drop in my car insurance rate
  2. No longer have to pay the damned “underage driver” fee when renting a car

Wow it pays to be a full-fledged adult. Before I was 21, being 21 was the large milestone because that means you can legally buy alcohol. After 21, it’s 25. Now that I’m 25 … I guess I should look out for my mid-life crisis soon? :p

Thanks for the best wishes.
